Recent decades have been marked by an upsurge in violence, which some seek to justify or gain acceptance in the name of religion or extremist ideologies, sparing no region of the world. Aware of their responsibility and legitimate role in preserving peace and promoting dialogue, in accordance with the spirit and teachings of all religions, eminent personalities and various institutions have pledged to provide a concerted response to this rise in violence and hatred in the world.

Efforts to establish a culture of peace, including the signing of the Document on Human Brotherhood for World Peace and Common Coexistence, are part of this effort. This document, commonly referred to as the Abu Dhabi Declaration calling for inter-religious dialogue, was jointly signed by the Imam of Al-Azhar, His Eminence Ahmed Al-Tayeb and His Holiness Pope Francis on February 4, 2019. In the same spirit and in accordance with the constant commitment of the Holy See, the encyclical Fratelli Tutti, signed on October 3, 2020, was symbolically distributed the following day, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. It also resounds as a reminder of the need to harmonize efforts for a more united, peaceful and fraternal world.

Encouraging this unprecedented global unitary dynamic, in a context of conflict and radicalization, the General Assembly of the United Nations, at its 75th session on December 22, 2020, unanimously decided to make February 4, the anniversary of the signing of the Document for Human Fraternity by the Pope and the Great Iman of Al-Azhar, an International Day of Human Fraternity. Member states are invited to include this celebration in their calendars.

On this solemn occasion, the Holy Father, the UN Secretary General and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar will deliver messages of global significance to mark this historic event. In the same perspective, the Jury of the Zayed Prize for Human Fraternity met recently in Dubai, from 20 to 22 January 2021, to determine the winner of the eponymous Prize for the year 2021.

It is in view of Senegal's attachment to the promotion of human fraternity as evidenced by the social cohesion and peace that prevails in our country, a pioneer in Islamic-Christian dialogue, that personalities from the political and scientific world, actors committed to the defense of human rights and the promotion of dialogue and conflict resolution want to mark this first International Day of Human Fraternity, by an online symposium open to the world on the theme: "African perspectives of Human Fraternity in Senegal".

This symposium, which is intended to be a contribution from Senegal to these joint efforts, will see the participation of various political, diplomatic, religious, academic, civil society and other personalities, in addition to organizations that have played a prominent role in the consolidation of dialogue and peace in Senegal, in Africa and internationally.

This initiative was led by Mr. Adama Dieng, member of the Jury of the Zayed Prize for Human Fraternity/Higher Committee of Human Fraternity, former United Nations Under-Secretary-General/Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide and former Registrar and Administrator of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, This symposium will be jointly organized by the Timbuktu Institute-African Center for Peace Studies in Dakar, in partnership with the Scientific Committee for Interreligious Dialogue of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, on Thursday, February 4, 2021, from 4 to 5:30 pm GMT.
