Like other AES countries, Niger is increasingly the target of terrorist attacks. In an operation conducted in the Tillabéry region, Nigerien soldiers reportedly neutralised 19 terrorists, arrested 32 suspected accomplices, and seized or destroyed significant equipment, including weapons, ammunition, motorbikes, solar panels and around fifteen improvised explosive devices. Nigerien defence and security forces also dismantled a major supply network. The tri-border area between Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali was also hit by a complex attack on the Bankilaré-Téra axis. On the Nigerien side, 16 soldiers were killed and 23 wounded, 9 of them seriously. On the attackers' side, 15 were neutralised and a significant amount of logistical equipment was seized. In this area, a major hotbed of activity for terrorist groups such as JNIM, the military intervention forced the assailants to retreat.

Furthermore, the combat helicopters promised by Russia will ultimately not be delivered to the three AES countries, even though they had been counting on them in particular to strengthen their aerial capabilities and better combat terrorism. These are Mil Mi-35M Hind-F helicopters, which the Confederation's member states intend to deploy in the counterterrorism fight that affects them so directly. The AES Unified Force had made the request earlier in 2026. A Russian response that could call their relationship into question. On the bilateral front, Niger and Benin appear to be moving towards reopening their shared border following the installation of Benin's new president, Romuald Wadagni. An announcement that could benefit both countries, particularly Niger, both in terms of port access and trade with its Beninese neighbour.
