On the night of 28 to 29 August 2026, a mutiny shook Niamey. A group of young soldiers attacked several sites, including Base Aérienne 101 located at Diori Hamani International Airport, not far from the presidential palace. After a night of intense fighting and a day of uncertainty, loyalist forces eventually regained control with the help of their Russian Africa Corps partners. The army has made several arrests of the young soldiers behind the mutiny.

The urgency for Tiani to restore trust with the army

This ordeal, which Abdourahmane Tiani's government had to confront, can be seen as revealing the Nigerien army's dependence on Africa Corps' Russian paramilitaries. Indeed, the latter acted as a “praetorian guard” to protect the regime, whereas they were more commonly seen engaged in counterterrorism. What's more, this ordeal puts President Tiani in a position where he must manage vulnerabilities and divisions within the army itself, caused largely by persistent insecurity in the face of armed groups. The survival of his power is at stake.

At the request of Nigerien authorities, Algeria came to reinforce it by deploying, from 30 August, four Su-30 fighter jets accompanied by a refueling aircraft and a transport plane to Niamey. Algiers presented this as a support mission for the Nigerien army, as part of strengthened bilateral military cooperation. Meanwhile, within the country, specifically in the Tillabéri region, the governor and Islamic scholars organized Quran readings and collective prayers in several mosques to pray for peace, security and social calm, in reaction to the events in Niamey.

A commitment to counterterrorism, more relevant than ever

At the same time, counterterrorism operations continue: the army announced the neutralization of at least 17 terrorists in recent military actions. Several dozen suspects were also arrested. Stockpiles of food and fuel, as well as a significant quantity of weapons, were also seized. The Malian army reaffirms its commitment to remain mobilized in the field to ensure the protection of the population across the entire national territory.
