At dawn on Tuesday, January 13, clashes broke out in Korbol (south) between the Chadian army and rebels from the Movement for Peace, Reconstruction and Development (MPRD). While Chadian soldiers had already been present in the Moyen-Chari region for several days, three emissaries (two sub-prefects and a canton chief) were sent to the area to deliver a 48-hour ultimatum. However, according to RFI, they were taken prisoner by the rebels. According to Luc Beyam, Secretary General of the MPRD, the army had been "attempting since Saturday to surround the men of the political-military group." This claim is contradicted by the Chadian authorities, who assert that an ambush was set by MPRD fighters. According to the army, the toll is three dead and ten wounded among the defense and security forces. It should be noted that there is "more damage on the Chadian soldiers' side," according to the MPRD secretary general. This violence comes after months of negotiations for the signing of a peace agreement between the authorities and the MPRD, with the aim of convincing the rebel group to disarm.
Border unrest
In a statement released on January 16, the Chadian authorities strongly condemned a new incursion by armed elements of the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who, according to them, raped seven soldiers and repeatedly violated Chadian airspace. N'Djamena warned that any further attempts at aggression, provocation, or violation of Chadian territory and its borders "from wherever they may come will be met with an immediate, vigorous, and relentless response."
Still on the borders, but this time on a more positive note, the authorities of Chad and Libya announced on January 11 the creation of a joint unit to strengthen security along their common border. This mechanism aims to improve coordination between the services of the two countries to combat cross-border crime, illicit trafficking, and illegal immigration, while regulating the movement of local populations.
